For the first time in a very long time, fans of Premier League and Championship football will have nothing to watch over the Easter holiday weekend next season.
FIFA made it official back in December that the international window next season will run from March 22 to March 30. The international window running from March 22 to 30 covers both of the biggest days of the Easter holiday weekend.
While Premier League and Championship fans are left with nothing, supporters of League One and League Two clubs have something to look forward to; matches are still scheduled to go ahead over the Easter period.
Although these may be postponed if some League One and League Two players receive international call-ups to go play for their home country instead of their club over that period.
If too many players are called away, their clubs simply won’t have enough players to field a team, and the match might get postponed.
Big Changes Coming to the Football Calendar Next Season
The Easter weekend blackout is just the beginning. That is not the only major shake-up heading the way of club football next season. FIFA has dropped another big announcement.
Starting from the 2026/27 season, next season, the September and October international breaks are being merged into one single longer break.
Because the September and October breaks are now merged, national teams will play four matches across two full weeks instead of the old format of just two matches in one week.
And for next season, FIFA has confirmed the exact dates this will happen, September 21 to October 6.
The Premier League kicks off on August 22, 2026. just five weeks of football, before everything grinds to a halt for the massive two-week international break running from September 21 to October 6.
During that same window, England’s national team, The Three Lions, will kick off their Nations League campaign. This means England fans have something exciting to look forward to during the club football break.
Not everything is changing. FIFA confirmed that the November and March international breaks will not be extended. They stay exactly as they are.
