Mikel Arteta described Arsenal’s 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth as “a big punch in the face” after the result left the Premier League title race significantly more uncertain heading into the final weeks of the season.
Arsenal, who came into the match nine points clear at the top of the table, were beaten at the Emirates Stadium for the second season running by Bournemouth. Goals from Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott gave the visitors all three points, with Viktor Gyökeres’ penalty the only response from the home side.
The result means Manchester City, who face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, can reduce Arsenal’s lead to six points if they win. The two title rivals then meet directly at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, April 19.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Arteta said: “Extremely disappointing, obviously. It’s a big punch in the face, and it is about how we react now. They are a team that hasn’t lost for 11 games, and it’s for a reason; they do a lot of things right.”
The Arsenal manager pointed to his side’s failure to take their chances as a key factor. “When we had situations in the first half to break the press and regain the ball, we were far from efficient. The first opportunity they had to attack the box, a deflection, a bad defending action, and it’s a goal.”
Arteta acknowledged the players are hurting but stressed they remain in a strong position. “It has to hurt. They have to take it on the chin. You stand up and go for the fight or you’re out. It’s a big week. A lot is at stake. We’re still in a good position in both competitions.”

Arsenal’s next two fixtures are the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP at the Emirates on Wednesday, April 15, and the Premier League trip to Manchester City on Sunday, April 19.
