Arteta Addresses His Arsenal Future as Contract Talks Get Under Way

Mikel Arteta has been asked to comment on his long-term future at Arsenal after reports emerged that initial discussions over a new contract have already begun, but the Spaniard insists his full focus remains on what could be the most important weeks of his managerial career.

 Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since December 2019, over six years now. He signed a three-year contract extension in September 2024, which means his current deal runs until the summer of 2027. According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, the process to renew Arteta’s contract is “underway” and set to recommence in the summer, with early optimism over a positive outcome.

Sources close to the club suggest the early conversations have been positive, although formal negotiations are expected to resume after the end of the current campaign. Arsenal’s leadership considers extending Arteta’s contract a major priority heading into the summer.

Reports indicate that Arteta wants assurances that Arsenal will continue to back him following talks over a contract extension.

What Did Arteta Say?

When asked directly about his future at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s home game against Bournemouth, Arteta kept his answer short and honest. He said: “There’s no news on that. We have no time to discuss that now. The full focus is on what we have to do from here until the end of the season.” 

“I am fully committed and really happy, and I feel good. My family is good, and I still have so much ambition to do with this football club, and for now, we are in a good place. “This job is about the present and what you do on the day. Give your very best and feel that you are the person who can lead and inspire the group to achieve great things for the club.

“And I feel that way, and hopefully I will feel that way for the rest of the week, and with a great outcome at the end of the season.”

That said, his broader feelings about the club are not a secret. Asked previously if he imagined staying with Arsenal beyond 2027, Arteta replied: “Yes, but it is about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well, to earn the right.”
